North Kingstown, Rhode Island (April 24, 2025)— On April 1st, 2025, the Senate and House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island resolved to declare March 31 as “Japan Day” to commemorate the 171st anniversary of the signing of the Japan-US Treaty of Peace and Amity, which was signed by Commodore Matthew Perry, who was born and raised in Rhode Island, and the Edo Shogunate on March 31, 1854. The resolution recognized the active relations between Japan and the United States, as well as between Japan and Rhode Island, across various fields such as politics, economics, and culture, and reaffirmed the commitment to further deepening these ties.
