Toray Plastics (America) Receives Sustainability Award For Lumilid® Bio-Based Lidding Film Technology

North Kingstown, Rhode Island (April 27, 2016)—Toray Plastics (America), Inc.’s (www.toraytpa.com),  LumiLid® bio-based PET dual-ovenable lidding films have earned the 2016 Sustainability Award from the Association of International Metallizers, Coaters, and Laminators (AIMCAL). Milan Moscaritolo, Senior Director of Sales and Marketing for Toray’s Lumirror® Division, accepted the award on March 20, 2016 during an awards dinner at AIMCAL’s annual management meeting. AIMCAL’s sustainability competition recognizes equipment, materials, or processes that reduce environmental impact, minimize energy usage or waste, and/or increase recycling. The Lumirror bio-PET films used in bio-based lidding are manufactured with more than 50 percent renewable feedstock, yet they offer the same, superior performance qualities that are characteristic of traditional LumiLid films—a low seal initiation temperature (SIT), broad seal range, seal integrity, and an easy peel. All LumiLid films are made without solvents.

A press release issued by AIMCAL noted that the LumiLid’s bio-based content, of which 50 percent is derived from a combination of bio-PET and bio-sealant, marks an impressive accomplishment and that the judges appreciated the energy savings potential of the film’s lower SIT. A member of the judging panel said, “It’s the right material at the right time. The demand for convenience foods is growing, and this meets the marketplace’s need for sustainability.”

Commenting on the recognition, Toray’s Moscaritolo says “This sustainability award means a lot to the company and all who collaborated on the research and development of a unique bio-based lidding film.” He added that Toray is committed to the pursuit of sustainable products and business practices and that the company intends to continue to be the leader in that arena.

The development of films made with renewable resources is just one part of Toray’s environmental profile. The company’s sustainability initiative includes Rhode Island’s largest solar farm and two cogeneration facilities, zero landfill, extensive recycling and water-conservation programs, the use of LED lighting internally and externally, and the installation of bio-based solar control window films on campus buildings.
